Eco-Friendly Farmhouse

LOCATION:
Off Kanakpura Town
SIZE:
2 acres
STATUS:
Work in Progress

A piece of land just short of 2 acres, set in the middle of agricultural fields, blessed with a bounty of natural water sources, rocky outcrops and natural ground slopes, this project had a mind of its own and evolved itself into a living, breathing entity! Conceptualised by the client initially as a tiny built-up shack with the primary purpose of using the entire land as a plant nursery, a large Kalyani/natural water pond took shape first. The shack upgraded to a 1-bedroom eco-friendly wood and mud block cottage. Slowly another large traditional Kerala Nallukettu home took shape around a nadumuttam, overlooking the Kalyani. (Traditional Kerala style home with 4 blocks of living spaces around a central courtyard) The walls of the home are built using mud blocks made in-situ and reassembled wooden walls from old Kerala homes. Roof is completely Kerala wooden truss with Mangalore tiles, supported on wooden and stone pillars. Natural mud plastering and clay paints are used for finishes. Bio septic tanks are planned for managing sanitary requirements and reusing greywater, Rain water harvesting network will redirect excess land run-off and roof water into the Kalyani and a nearby natural stream, Self-generated solar power panels are planned to sustain the power requirements of the property.
